These words, Awareness, Presence and God, have been and are popular words, mostly in religious, spiritual, and new age concousness. Do these words help us to be in Happiness, Love, Truth or Freedom? The answer depends on who you ask, or more precisely, do they help you? One of the most popular words, is Awareness. Phrases such as, "you are the Awareness"  or you are "Presence Awareness", are to be found abundantly in spiritual writings.

In my own case I grew up assuming that awareness was a quality that all humans had..not what they were. It was thought to be part of our arsonal of human tools. I had always assumed that it took two things for there to be any awareness. That was, an object and subject. For instance, if I noticed someone or something, I had to be there and that someone or something had to be there, for me to be aware of that someone or something. I am aware of you, you are aware of me, I am aware of the table but the table is not aware of me or you. So awareness was assumed to be only a human quality....so therefore the human was prior to the quality of awareness. Now this was my understanding, but I am only speaking for me, since others may have lived with different assumptions.

So, as I was seeking for "myself", and I read or was told,  "observe awareness" or "you are awareness", I was looking for a quality or piece of life as if it were somehow seperate from the whole. The body and its sensations was also overlooked.  I kept sliceing up my life trying to find this thing called awareness or Presence, so I could find "myself" and be liberated. I was mistaken, because anything that can be set aside or cut off from the whole, is not complete. In fact not any word can be used to liberate one from seperation. Belief in words is seperation. The whole is not definable by concepts in a way that is ultimately liberating.By whole, I mean everything that is and isn't, anything or nothing. But even  words like Awareness and whole can become corrupt, in just the same way the word God has become corrupt. I am not sure if any word, concept or utterance, will ever hold up to be a final pointer to the Reality that Is, Is and Is!

I am not the word Awareness, I am not the word Presence, I am not the word God, because these words are concepts and a concept is limited, temporary and implies different meanings to different people. However, for some, considering the word Awareness, Presence or Being may point to the actuality of our true condition.

Now I find Awareness to be a great pointer of the true nature of all that arises, including this apparent "me". It is this every day Awareness that is always shining, radiating, with eyes open or closed. And once investigated it can be seen that Awareness is all encompusing. Awareness or Being must be already present for any thing at all to be noticed. Within Awareness the sense of me arises along with the story and assumptions about the "me" and these are what we build our life with. But even this "I" and its stories required Awareness to be already present.

I also find the word Being to be a good pointer to the nature of this mystery.  Being like Awareness allows all and excludes nothing. They are not limited to everything or nothing. If these works for you, good...It could be said that the Real "I" when spoken about, is  pointing to our True Self, or the great "I AM", which is just an verbal utterance or exclamation of Being or Awareness Itself. Even these are a concepts unless its realized as the basic space of all and nothing.
